Fanfiction with fanfiction as its canon

Tue May 6, 2008, 8:51 AM
You know, it's strange ... fanfiction of fanfiction is a strange, strange notion. I have recently found myself playing in other fanfic writers' sandboxes and it's only now struck me as just how odd it really is.

I mean, we all know that fanon spreads and grows and eventually becomes accepted fact. Just look at Prowl/Jazz, Medic Swoop, and Ratchet's hands as in indication of how one person's fics can change the way a whole group of authors see the core - heck, I've seen new fans swear that Prowl/Jazz is canon, and I figure that eventually it will be the same with Sam/Bee ... I can't actually think of any Het pairings that work like this, I think that most (if not all) of those are stated or implied in the canon sources.

Anyway, I have recently been finding myself playing in PuraJo's sandbox, specifically with her Special Ops Trine fics. It just struck me last night, as I was writing, and asking her advice on how she sees her characters just how interesting the phenomenon really is. I mean, I doubt that I'd ever stop Simon Furman at a Botcon to ask his thoughts on how I portray Ratchet/Megatron (not that I didn't try ... but he was gone by the time I found him).

But I'm rambling. I've found that Botcon has recharged my creative battery. Stories that have been the barest of bunnies for the longest time are finally getting written, and edits are well underway on the fics that need them. I have to admit, it's nice to be creative again. Maybe by November of next year when NaNo rolls around again I'll have a clean plate to work with ... yeah, who am I kidding!

I have a hard time understanding seeing Prowl/Jazz as a canon pairing.I also have a hard time understanding how any pairing of two particular characters can be seen as canon. The only canon pairings that I can think of are Optimus Prime/Elita-1 and Ironhide/Chromia.I have also seen in fan fiction such pairings like Hound/Mirage,Sunstreaker/Bluestreak and even Prowl/Sideswipe(this one I have actually learned to like). Most of them don't make any sense to me,while others if they are written well I have learned to enjoy.Personally, I think most pairings are the wishful thinking of a writer.

Oh yes, most pairings are just wishful thinking. and I'm not suggesting that they aren't. It's more that certain facets of fandom become so pervasive that they become canon for the fandom - if that makes any sense. For instance, when I first started writing Prowl/Ratchet was was informed (very politely, mind you) that while the pairing was interesting, it was no Prowl/Jazz.

Many of the pairings out there (be they het or slash) aften come across as "banging the pretty things together", but when a good writer gets their hands on a pairing, they can turn the stranges things into pure gold. I mean, I imagine that when Nightwind first wrote Prowl/Jazz the response was probably one of disbelief, but she made them work so well that the pairing became accepted to the point that for a time you'd be hard pressed to find a slash writer who *didn't* pair them up. It was just accepted fact.

There are certain pairings that you can justify as "true" canon (even if you have to squint): Op/Elita, Ironhide/Chromia, Red Alert/Inferno, Powerglide/Astoria, Ratchet/Megatron just to name a few, while others, the ones I'm talking about, as "fanon canon" - if such a thing is even possible.

I know what you mean by a good writer making particular pairings work.I had a hard time accepting people "slashing' characters in the beginning. Now I am a fan of some slash pairings, such as ryagelle's pairing of Wheeljack/Bluestreak,your pairing of Prowl/Ratchet and I am even a fan of papyrusquill's pairing of movie Jazz/Bumblebee.Most them are on Livejournal and Fan Fiction. net.

Wonderful that you have lots more plot bunnies =) As I am dying for more Wheeljack and Smokescreen, since I think you write them well enough to become fannon someday =) (and that is in spite of my tendency to want to see Jack and Ratchet together) so if you can sell me the rest of the fandom will be easy!!!

Okay, so what part of the ramblings is the "whoa" in response to?

(And it is ramblings. Please don't take me too seriously)

Wow! You've put me in good company! Ryagelle and Papyrusquill are fantastic authors. Thank you.

I know I felt the same way as you did about slash. I had not seen a well written slash fic and I was of the belief that such an animal did not exist. ... and then I read some transformers slash and I started having my mind changed. ... as I recall it was a fic by Wilderness.
:iconwyntir-rose:
:) Well, it'd be wonderful to see the pairing viewed as something other than total crack someday, but I doubt I'll ever see a JackxSmokey community on LJ :)

No problem.I always enjoy the Transformers fan fiction that you write.
